WHAT IS DOWNY MILDEW?
Downy mildew is caused by parasitic organisms that are more closely related to algae, affect many plants, and appear as yellow to white patches on the upper surfaces of older leaves. On the undersides, these areas are covered with white to grayish, cotton-like fungi.
HOW TO PREVENT DOWNY MILDEW
Here are some things you can do to control downy mildew before it occurs.
- • Downy mildew needs water to survive, the very best thing you can do to prevent downy mildew is to water your plants from below. Water that sits on the leaves of the plant gives the downy mildew a way to infect and spread on the plant.
- • Good garden hygiene is also crucial to stopping downy mildew from developing in your garden. This disease overwinters on dead plant material, so removing dead plant material from your garden will help prevent the disease.
- • Water in the early morning hours, to give the plants time to dry out during the day.
- • As a preventive method, loosen the soil in the root of the plant. Prepare the mix of Epsom Salt + Bonemeal + Vermi Compost. Put this in the root and mix with soil and give water regularly as per plant's water need.
HOW TO TREAT DOWNY MILDEW
- • Remove and destroy any plants with a serious infection.
- • Keep the ground under infected plants clean to prevent the disease from spreading.
- • Once your plants have downy mildew, the best thing you can do is to try to eliminate moisture and humidity around the plants. As mentioned, make sure you are watering from below.
- • If your plants only have a mild case of downy mildew, your best option may be to simply place your plant in warm weather.
- • Arrange yellow fly traps in your garden, that will attract flies and insects and minimize the diseases and propagation of diseases.
- • Take one-liter water and mix 5 ML of Organic Neem Oil & 5 ML Bath shampoo mix them well in the water. Spray that solution on every leaf until it's fully wet. Repeat this spraying every week for few weeks using a sprayer.
